The Difference Between Gray Coverage and Gray Blending

There’s a subtle art to managing gray hair. Here’s how to decide between coverage and blending:

  • Gray Coverage: This is full opacity — the goal is to completely hide gray hair using permanent color. Best for clients who want a uniform tone and strong regrowth line management.
  • Gray Blending: A softer approach using demi-permanent color or highlights to diffuse gray strands without fully covering them. It creates dimension and a more natural grow-out.
Which is Right for You?
If you’re just starting to go gray and want a softer look with lower maintenance, blending is ideal. If you’re already 50%+ gray and prefer polished, even color, coverage may be the better route.
